TOUR OVERVIEW:

CUSCO ARCHAEOLOGICAL TOUR

ITINERARY

CUSCO ARCHAEOLOGICAL TOUR SACSAYHUAMÁN – Q'ENQO – PUKA PUCARA – TAMBOMACHAY

TAMBOMACHAY: This Inca site is located about 8 km north of Cusco and very close to the ruins of Puka Pukara . It is an archaeological site that was used for the worship of water, and is also considered a resting place for the supreme ruler of that time. This place is also called the Inca Baths. It consists of a series of aqueducts, canals and several waterfalls that run down the rocks. The surprising thing about this is that, from a main waterfall, the Incas created 2 secondary waterfalls, which are exactly the same. That is, if you put two empty bottles, one in each waterfall, both are filled at the same time.

PUKA PUKARA: Puka Pukara means “red fortress”, because the limestone stones with which it is built have acquired the reddish colour of the terrain, which is rich in iron. It is said that it had the function of protecting Tambomach’ay , an important palace in the Inca period. But, in turn, due to its architectural layout and the existence of fountains, aqueducts and multiple enclosures, it was a “tambo”, that is, a collective shelter that offered lodging and food to travellers, as well as to the entourage that had to accompany the Inca in his retreat in Tambomach’ay .

Q’ENQO: Located four kilometers northeast of the city of Cusco, it has the archaeological groups of Q’enqo Grande and Q’enqo Chico. Etymologically, it means labyrinth or zigzag, and it served a purely religious function. On the outside there is a semicircular amphitheater with trapezoidal niches and a monolith that simulates a puma, which measures approximately six meters.

SACSAYHUAMAN: The impressive Sacsayhuaman fortress is strategically built on a hill overlooking the whole of Cusco. Famous for its enormous carved stones, some of which are 9 meters or 30 feet high and weigh more than 350 tons, this Inca site was the scene of many battles between the Incas and the Spanish, and is still used as the main stage for the largest festival in the region, the Inty Raymi or Festival of the Sun

Difference between Lares Trek and Inca Trail

There are some key differences between the Lares Trek and the Inca Trail.

  • Lares Trek is a shorter and easier hike; you can visit local villages and interact with children. You can find beautiful Andean lakes where llamas and alpaca’s graze.
  • Inca Trail is a longer trek and takes 4-5 days. This is a porter-only trek where you can find beautiful natural spaces and ancient Inca sites.

Difference between Lares Trek and Salkantay Trek

When it comes to choosing a trek to Machu Picchu, there are many factors to consider. But one of the most important decisions is choosing between the Lares Trek and the Salkantay Trek. Both treks have unique benefits, so it’s important to choose the one that’s right for you.

  • Lares Trek is shorter than Salkantay Trek, but it could be a challenge. This is because Lares Trek takes place at a higher altitude, which can be difficult to handle for some people. But if you are up for a challenge, Lares Trek is an amazing experience. You will get to see some of the most beautiful scenery on this trek, and you will also get to meet some of the local people who live in this remote region of Peru.
  • The Salkantay Trek is longer than the Lares Trek and more challenging. However, this trek takes place at a lower altitude after the third day, making it easier to manage for most people.
